P&W Architects is now PhiloWilke Partnership

Here’s the story:  Dana Wilke, AIA and Roger Philo, AIA created PhiloWilke in 1985.  When Roger retired in 2002, we changed our name to P&W Architects.  But even so, many of you continued to call us PhiloWilke.  Maybe it was just a habit, or you liked it better or just never grew accustomed to using the initials P&W?  Well - we have to admit - we like our original name better too!

PhiloWilke has a respected history and a solid reputation for:

+             responsive design;

+             technical expertise; and,

+             exceptional service.

So go ahead, feel free to continue to call us PhiloWilke.  In fact, we encourage it!

Don’t forget the Partnership.  Our partner involvement on every single project is what makes us unique.

And thank you for your long standing support!

You are the sole reason for our continued success in architecture...

Our design is your business.

Taking Control of your e-mail Inbox

Do you have an effective way to process and organize your e-mail so that you can get to an empty Inbox on a routine basis? If you have lots of e-mail in your Inbox—we know people with as many as 7,000 messages—you might want to rethink your processing methods. Really, it is possible to empty your Inbox. The key is to evaluate how you are processing and organizing your e-mail and make some changes.

No doubt you've opened an e-mail and thought, "Hmmm, not sure what to do with this. I'll deal with it later!"—and promptly closed the message. If you do this over and over again, it doesn't take long to end up with several hundred (or thousand) messages in your Inbox.

Developing a new approach to processing your Inbox will help you to gain more control, improve your response time, and keep up with critical actions and due dates.

This article will cover 4 key factors that will help you process your e-mail more efficiently.

7 Steps When an Owner Presents you with a One-Sided Agreement

Follow These Seven Steps When an Owner Presents You With a One-Sided Agreement
By Michael Strogoff, AIA

I was recently asked by an A/E firm to review an owner-architect agreement given to them by a new client. The agreement consisted of eighteen pages describing the A/E team’s responsibilities; three pages describing the owner’s termination rights; a largely uninsurable set of indemnifications; a list of certifications and warranties required of the A/E team; and a set of lengthy appendices containing insurance requirements, schedule provisions and compensation terms. The agreement incorporated by reference the client’s RFP and the A/E team’s marketing proposal. The agreement also described, in sixty words, the owner’s responsibilities:

The owner shall 1) attend all meetings with the A/E team that the Owner determines are necessary, 2) retain a construction manager to manage the project and perform a constructability review, the results of which the A/E team shall incorporate into the construction documents, and 3) promptly notify the A/E team of all claims the Owner intends to submit.

Where does one start in responding to such an unacceptable agreement?
