Stereotactic Radiotherapy Suite, UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center

This room allows researchers to test an innovative approach to treating spinal tumors. A computed tomography (CT) machine-”CT on rails” – is in the same treatment suite as the linear accelerator, so that radiation oncologists can instantly adjust radiation beams to account for any changes in tumor location, no matter how small.
Patients remain immobilized on the same treatment table while the CT on rails moves about the table to confirm tumor location. Previously, stereotactic spine radiation was not possible because the CT scan was done in a separate room, increasing the chances that the treatment area may shift. Combining stereotactic treatment with near simultaneous CT imaging ensures pinpoint accuracy in aiming radiation beams.
